Houston is the 4th largest city in the US, and a major airline hub with many direct flights from major cities across the world. The climate is subtropical, the typical daytime temperature in December – January is about 15 – 20 C, with low humidity. Rice is a small private research university, established in 1912. It has seven Schools (Natural Sciences, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Architecture, Music, and Business). Rice consistently places high in various rankings (among the top 20 in the US by US News and World Report).

Houston is home to the largest medical center in the world just across the street from Rice University. Rice faculty and students have numerous collaborations with leading medical research institutions (The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, The Methodist Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine). The Rice campus is located near the urban core of Houston within easy walking distance of the Houston Museum District with several world-class art and science museums. There is also easy access to Rice Village including many shops and restaurants. The campus is adjacent to the Houston Metro light rail line providing direct access to the city’s performing arts district.
